An industrial diptych of a manhole cover and metal ring, highlighting geometric design and worn urban textures.
For this pair of photographs I was responding to the geometry of circles and lines, of lines bisecting the circles, the extremely rich texture, and the complementary colors of orange and blue. This piece did take more time than usual to edit the colors so that the two images would be similar enough to work as a diptych.
The first image is the only "round thing" shot outside of New York City, being from Washington, D.C., in the Capital Hill neighborhood (where at one time I lived). I was excited to find a lot of roadwork going on at the time of this visit, and I shot numerous pics at this site. This first object is an old discarded manhole frame (support for a manhole cover), with scads of dirt and rust and crumbling texture. It is resting on a surface of textured dirt/dried mud on the left and a contrasting smooth tarp on the right (which provides the straight edge intersecting the circle).
The second image has on top what I'm guessing to be the underside of one manhole lid with the corresponding tools used to remove it, and underneath is the top of a separate typical manhole cover that we are used to seeing. This image too has a lot of interesting texture and bisecting lines and the 2 removal hooks add a lot of interest. The second image was photographed in Times Square about 2 years after the first, and it pairs nicely with the other.
