Monumental cement grain elevators have long defined the skylines of midwestern towns, and this panoramic work, drawn from Prairie City, Iowa, gives them full compositional weight. Silos, water towers, and industrial structures are layered across the frame, producing a complex, dreamlike atmosphere with a muted palette of blues and grays that recalls the graphic ambition of WPA murals. A railroad crossing sign anchors the foreground, introducing a point of human scale within the expansive industrial field.
Part of Susan Bowen's Holgaramas series, exploring layered views of the rural landscape through continuous, overlapping frames.
