A poetic fusion of light, motion, and transit, this image layers multiple exposures to depict the fleeting energy of a departing subway train. Blurred figures, reflective metal, and deep urban hues create an evocative sense of movement and time.

Submitted for a competition for those cards displayed along the ceiling of subway cars, I shot a bunch of pictures of the NYC subway. In that the Holga has no controls, these were mostly shot outdoors on elevated platforms. My favorite of the bunch was this subway stop at Smith and 9th Street in Brooklyn. It includes people exiting the cars and waiting for the next train. The colors turned out to be muted purples and browns merging with the blue of the sky. The overlap of the silver of the train, the angles created, and the movement of the figures made this image be alive with motion.

This is an overlapping multiple exposure photograph shot on a single roll of film. The image is split into manageable sized panels each about 30" wide, face-mounted to acrylic. Overall image width can be estimated by multiplying the height by 6.
